I came here with my mother to look at adoptable dogs. The setting was large and as clean and open as can be expected from a charity doing its best. The site was broken down by size of dogs and by dogs and cats. The were large both indoor and outdoor pens to meet the potential pets. They had separate small buildings where you could meet your next friend. In order to meet a new friend, you first must fill out an application and meet a volunteer. With the dogs, they were firm about wanting people who would be active and walk the dogs frequently and exercise them regularly. They were knowledgeable about the dog breeds and seemed to have good information about where the animals came from. We did not about in this visit.
This organization is highly recommended.
We dropped off 4 kittens we had been fostering for a month. We tried to find them homes, we had 5 before so we found a home for one of them. We decided to take the others to the shelter to improve the chances of getting them adopted. The staff was great for the most part. When it came to leaving after the kittens were taken in, they asked us if we would make a donation. We told them we wish we could right now but unfortunately we can’t because of our financial situation at the moment. As we were leaving, another staff member asked the person who was helping, “No donation.” This was very unprofessional and made us feel bad. We tried to find the kitties homes, we gave them baths before we dropped them off, they were feed and played with daily, and we provided all the information in an a way that would help make the transition as smooth as possible. I don’t understand why they would say No donations and talk about it as we were walking away in front of other guests. I was very disappointed but hope they can correct instances like these in the future with other people who try their best with carrying for animals.
They don’t let you look at the dogs before applying. Called before driving the hour there to make sure an appointment wasn’t necessary, and was told I could only through the windows in the hallway at empty crates. Lady got nasty with me on the phone when I called back for clarification. Wouldn’t have made the drive if I couldn’t even see the dogs to know which I was interested in applying for.
They did not tell me they were full at first. They wanted to do an assessment. I told them the dog does not like other dogs they could not do the assessment so then they said they were full. I explained we can not have the dog someone abandoned the dog at our house. And if they did not take it that was the same as them putting the dog down because this is what we’re now forced to do.
Set in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of PA, AWSOM is Monroe County's original, no-kill animal shelter since 2009. They not only care for dogs and cats that are dropped off, found or generally unwanted, they have a fantastic Wellness Center that offers an array of services from nail clipping to spaying/neutering. Volunteers are always needed and donations are always necessary and appreciated!! My volunteer dog walking time has been purely selfish because I think I've gotten more out of it than the dogs have. So can you!!! VOLUNTEER!! DONATE!! LOVE!! CARE!! SHARE!!
Awesome is a welcoming pet care facility. Affordable and professional, I know our Cat Freddie is in the best of care there. Today he got his annual shots and license. Next week he is going back for some grooming. I trust this well trained staff who are so genuine in their love of caring for animals.
Martha helped my wife an I fill out the adoption application and made our visit to AWSOM Animal Shelter an enjoyable experience. The shelter is like no other shelter we visited in the past. It was quite obvious that all the people that work there are truly into what they do. The dogs were outside in the fresh air, walked, played with and exercised in the dog corral. If your looking for a puppy or an adult dog take a look at their website or call. AWSOM Animal Shelter is highly recommended!
The stuff is pretty good although the receptionist had an attitude. With all the covid restrictions in place, sometimes people behind the counter get impatient and rude. AWSOM overall does great work, the prices are about half of what you'd expect to pay at a clinic and they do care for their animals! They do "stack" their appointments and sometimes you may have to wait for almost an hour past your appointment time BUT it's all worth it. Our beloved pets are well taken care of.
